What is Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery?

HPB (Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary) surgery is a specialized field focused on treating benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tree. Due to its complexity, HPB surgery requires specialized training and experience. has developed its HPB Surgery Program with the aim of delivering state-of-the-art, high-quality care to patients and their families. We are dedicated to providing multidisciplinary care, involving collaboration among our surgeons, nurse practitioners, and specialists in gastroenterology (GI), interventional radiology (IR), medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, nutrition, and more. As a patient in the HPB Surgery Program, you have access to all these services and specialists.

HPB Surgical Procedures

Complex hepatic (liver), pancreatic, and biliary surgeries, including, but not limited to:

  • Liver resection (major and minor)
  • Liver tumor ablation
  • Pancreas resection for benign and malignant disease (including Whipple procedure)
  • Bile duct resection
  • Bile duct repair
  • Complex gallbladder resection

All of these surgical procedures (including major pancreatic surgeries and the Whipple procedure) can be performed in a minimally invasive fashion, when appropriate, through the use of robotic or laparoscopic surgical techniques.

HPB Surgery Program Services

  • Individualized care plans for each patient
  • Utilization of evidence-based clinical pathways for enhanced recovery
  • Multidisciplinary care through:
    • Multidisciplinary Clinics (MDC): Sometimes, surgery is only one part of the treatment plan, especially in cancer cases. Multidisciplinary clinics are designed for patients who may need additional non-surgical treatment before or after surgery. During these appointments, patients can see both surgical and non-surgical specialists simultaneously. This approach allows us to provide an integrated and comprehensive treatment plan.
    • Tumor Board Conferences: Surgical decision-making often requires input from other specialists. Tumor Board Conferences bring all specialists involved in a patient’s care together to review the patient’s case in detail and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
  • Nutritionists
  • Genetic Counselors
  • Research Trials
  • Wellness Programs before and after surgery
  • Survivorship treatment plans
